In 1986 a lava flow from Piton de la Fournaise reached the sea here and enlarged the island by several hectares; an interpretive trail with information panels now crosses this young lava. It starts from the Puits Arabe picnic area, an old well dug into the basalt among screw pines.
Allow about 1 hour return on the coastal path, in full sun: a hat and water are essential. Do not go down onto the rocks at the water's edge; the swell is powerful and swimming impossible. Parking at the end of the Puits Arabe forest road.
