Beside the volcano road, a short path leads to the rim of this vast collapse crater, more than 200 m deep, lying outside the Enclos Fouqué. Its bare scoria walls give a striking glimpse of Piton de la Fournaise's past activity.
Stay behind the railing: the edge is unstable and the drop sheer. The site is often in fog after 10 am and it is cold. Combine it with Nez de Bœuf and the Plaine des Sables on the same road.
